I find myself, constantly singing that song from Blink 182 "What's my age again? What's my age again?....." and it's not because I'm a massive fan of Blink 182, it's because I get utterly confused by advertisements I see. Not just that...from conversations with "beauty professionals" or "industry professionals" that leave me thinking "was that a good conversation or was I insulted?" Let me explain:
The most famous line which is a backwards compliment is "you look great..for your age". No I either look great or I don't there is no "but". My personal favorite is: "Oh my God, YOU'RE 30?!?!?!" Yea dude I'm thirty, full blown adult, got bills, have less time for drama, married, have a house, the list goes on and on. Also, thanks to being 30....I know what I like and what I don't. I don't have time for people who waste mine with nonsense. I know my limits, that's the most important thing.
Last year RoC did a study on women called #ForYourAge...what it showed was "82% of women have heard this "you look great...for your age" in the past year". Plus, the majority of those women would rather you not compliment them at all if that was going to be the compliment. Can't say as I blame them. It's a kick in the pants man. Not to mention every commercial skin care company uses a 20ish year old model for their "ageing" line. Why? What does that even tell me? Kendall Jenner doesn't even have fine lines guys! She's not a good fit for an anti-aging product. So RoC sent me a Think Twice Buzzer, yes an actual buzzer. To really drive it home that we should think about our words and how they're going to come out. It may come from the best inentions but it's not always perceived as that. It's often looked at.....oh, so I'm no longer pretty. Or I'm pretty for my age group only. I wish I wasn't this age. Here's the deal and I learned it a very long time ago from Caroline Hirons which is my queen as you know, once said "if we didn't age, it meant we were dead" that's the alternative to not getting any older. I have a lot of life left to live. 30 or not, 40 or not, 50 or not, we are all "look great" period. There are no "buts" or any hesitation, or any stipulations, we simply look great. We're all very apt to put our foot in our mouth from time to time. Let's try to be more aware ok? Let's imagine the compliment we would love to recieve before we tell someone one that they're basically mediocre. Let's all "think twice before using #ForYourAge" again.
