Tips for Oily Skin

I know that I don't have oily skin but I've worked on clients that have had minor to major oil issues. Especially teens. So I know how aggravating it can be. I've compiled a few products that I find are helpful for everyday to events. Keep in mind I do both consultations to help people learn how to do their makeup and what will work best for them and their features and issues, also on occasion I do events as well like weddings and proms depending on my health issues at the time. So I feel like I get to see both sides of the spectrum every day and special days.
  • First up you need to moisturize. Everyone does for anti aging benefits and also to help level out your oil production. You'll be amazed at how much it helps. I was afraid to use Argan Oil because I had been oily for a few months, as soon as I started using it at night my oil totally leveled out and made my skin much more normal and easy to work with. If you aren't comfortable with that then I think Origins Ginzing moisturizer is great. It's thinner formula and absorbs fast as well.
  • Oil Mattifiers. Murad has one that I really like that I've even used as a primer some too. It's just called Murad Oil Control Mattifier. If you have major oil issues I'd use this as well as a primer on top. This has a silicone feel cause it's matte obviously. I really do like it.
  • Primers for oil control. Makeup Forever Mattifying Primer, Neutrogena Shine Control Primer, Bare Minerals Oil Control Primer, NYX Shine Killer. There are plenty out there. Sephora is really good to give out samples as well if you're not sure about a foundation, primer, concealer etc. they will help you out most of the time and get you a small container with a small sample of the product so you can try it before actually purchasing it. They also have a very nice return policy at Sephora as well.
  • Oil free foundations. This is a no brainer. I'm sure you're already aware of this tip. So to cut to the chase I like Revlon Colorstay Foundation for Combination to Oily Skin (Make sure you get the one that says for oily skin etc and not the normal to dry one), Laura Mercier Oil Free Supreme Foundation, Makeup Forever Mat Velvet + (this is for those of you that just have minor oil issues cause it's matte finish not necessarily oil controling) Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless formula. These are just a few of many. Again you can get samples from Sephora if you go with one of those and if you buy the drugstore ones from say Walgreens you can return them as well if they aren't working for you.
  • Setting spray. Basically there is only two that I recommend: Ben Nye Final Seal which was made for stage makeup to hold up underneath hot stage lights and not move as well as helping with sweating. Also, Urban Decay De Slick Setting Spray, this comes in a travel size as well as a big size if you're not wanting it for everyday. The Ben Nye comes in 4 sizes I think 1 oz, 2 oz, 8oz and then a gigantic milk jug looking kind. It's relatively inexpensive I have the 2oz and I'm pretty sure it was just $6 you can order it off Amazon or Frends Beauty Supply. The Urban Decay is $14 for the Travel Size which is 1 oz and then $30 for 4 oz. I'm sure there are others but these are the only ones that I really can say I recommend.
  • As far as concealer goes MAC Pro Longwear concealer has Anti Crease technology so it doesn't crease, it's a liquid concealer, and also works as a primer for the eyelids as well I use this under the eye mostly. Also Kryolan Dermacolor Cream Concealer is a dry formula but full coverage as well and I think it's a good choice for blemishes.

I worked with someone recently who had the most oil I've ever seen in my whole life. So after some revisions to her makeup we finally got her makeup to stay on and matte for about 6 hrs. I wanted to tell you exactly what I used.

First we used Murad Oil Control Mattifier Lotion
Next we used Makeup Forever Step 1 Equalizer Mattifying Primer
I used kabuki brushes to stipple the foundation into the skin instead of a damp Beauty Blender, which seems to make things dewy on it's own.
Then I used two separate oil control/free foundations for both coverage, color, and to thin one out. Which was Revlon Colorstay Foundation for Oily to Combination skin then mixed Laura Mercier Oil Free Foundation. The Laura Mercier is much thicker and full coverage and can look a little cakey so I used the Revlon Colorstay to thin it out mainly, but also lighten the color up some to match her.
Then I used all Matte powders on her. I used ABH Contour Powders the matte ones, and the contour colors to contour, and then I used matte blushes. I think I used MAC Royal Sunset with a little Peaches thrown in.
No highlighter what so ever because we knew she would get some shine at some point so we didn't want to run the risk of bringing to much attention to it like highlighters tend to do.
Last but not least we set it with Ben Nye Final Seal Matte Setting Spray. I sprayed it on a flat kabuki brush first and pressed it on the skin and then sprayed it onto the skin.
